Sable Island Sweat Bee (Lasioglossum sablense)

20 Apr 2015

Both sexes can be distinguished from the three other bee species (two of these sweat bees) on Sable Island by the combination of their small size and the dense lateral punctures on the dorsal part of the thorax. [...] Of the four bee species occurring on Sable Island, the Sable Island Sweat Bee is the least commonly collected. [...] Current human activity is minimal due to the isolation of the island and the control of visitors. [...] Pollination services by the Sable Island Sweat Bee and other bees on the island are likely crucial for the maintenance of these restricted plant populations on the island. [...] The number of known specimens of the Sable Island Sweat Bee is very small due to limited sampling of bees on Sable Island.
